Steve and Donna Dodson founded their first construction company in 1982, in Palm Desert, California. In 1994, the company expanded to include an office in Temecula, California, which enabled them to cover all of Southern California. The company completed thousands of swimming pools, spas, and water features - with both residential and commercial contracts. During the 1990's, barbecue cook islands were added, creating complete back yard environments, each custom designed to unique specifications.

The Dodsons enjoyed an excellent reputation, completing as many as 500 projects a year. Many of their designs have been acknowledged over the years by the National Spa and Pool institute, including the International "Best of Show" Award, along with many gold, silver and bronze design awards over the years. They have been featured in many magazine articles, including spreads in Palms Springs Life. They have a swimming pool award on display in The Swimming Pool Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and are represented in a book of the Top 100 Pools in US History.

In 2003, the Dodsons relocated to the Big Island of Hawaii. Leisure Island Grills LLC was founded in December of 2003. The first six months was nothing but research and development, testing products and materials that would withstand the harsh elements found in Hawaii.

Leisure Island barbecue grills and cook islands are currently featured on the "Cooking with Cutty" television program, which is broadcast on Hawaiian channel OC 16 daily. Several local chefs and restaurant owners now have Leisure Island custom designed cook islands, as well as barbecue grills, in their personal homes and well as in their establishments.

Leisure Island Grills has completed projects and also shipped complete cook islands to all the major Hawaiian Islands. The luxurious Kona Hawaiian Village/Fairfield Resort had Leisure Island retrofit ten barbecue islands, removinig and replacing grills and cook top surfaces where needed. Fairmont Classic Resorts Hawaii completed several $30,000 plus custom outdoor cook islands at private resort residences in Hauali and Kukio gated communities.

In 2007, after many clients of Leisure Island Grills in Hawaii, who knew of the company on the mainland, requested that Steve design and complete their swimming pool projects - and after much consideration - the Dodson's decided to put their construction knowledge back to work. Hence, shortly thereafter, Kona Kai Pools LLP was up and running, with several projects now completed, and more under way on the Big Island.
